Katarina started skating ice at the age of five. When her talent for skating was more evident and she was accepted to the Karl-Marx-Stadt school that specializes in youngsters with athletic aptitude. She got to know Jutta Muller here. Witt finished second at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. It was her first appearance. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt captured the eyes of all and she has dominated her sport ever since. Olympic success Katarina Wit won gold in the women's ice skaters during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a highly competitive and intense contest. Four years later she was able to win an even tougher competition. She did not win the free skating contest but won gold based on performance during the mandatory short and figure programme. Witt became the first female repeated winner of figure skating following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt, who was a star in film acting, then returned to figure skating in 1994 to compete at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Although she didn't get a medal, she enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in 1995.
